Organic Cotton Bras, the French Way: A Guide to Huit's BIO Collection
Most organic cotton bras ask you to choose. You can have the soft, breathable, chemical-free fabric, or you can have a bra that actually fits and holds its shape — rarely both. The category has been dominated for years by shapeless pullover styles in small, medium and large, which works beautifully if you're a small or a medium, and not at all if you've ever been fitted properly.
Huit, a French house that has been making lingerie since 1968, takes a different approach: build the organic cotton pieces on the same underwire and cup architecture as the lace ones. The result is a cotton bra sized 30 through 38, B through F, that behaves like a bra.
Here's what to look for in organic cotton lingerie generally, and what's in the Huit collection specifically.
What "organic cotton" actually means on a lingerie label
The phrase is used loosely, so three things are worth checking before you buy.
Certification, not adjectives. "Natural," "pure" and "eco" mean nothing in particular. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies that the cotton was grown organically and that the processing — dyeing, finishing, the whole chain — met environmental and labour criteria. It's the strictest of the common marks.
OEKO-TEX® is a different promise. It certifies the finished fabric has been tested for harmful substances. It doesn't tell you the fibre was organically grown. The two certifications answer different questions, which is why serious brands carry both. Huit's BIO pieces are made with certified 100% organic cotton and OEKO-TEX® approved materials.
The percentage, and where the rest went. A bra that is "organic cotton" is almost never 100% organic cotton throughout, and shouldn't be — you need elastane in the band for recovery, or the bra stretches out within a month. What matters is that the cotton sits against your skin and the synthetics do structural work. Read the composition for the cup lining, not just the headline.
If you have sensitive skin, eczema, or you're recovering from surgery or treatment, this combination — organic fibre next to the skin, tested for residues, no harsh finishing chemicals — is the reason to pay attention to the certification rather than the marketing.
Who Huit is
Huit was founded in 1968 in Rennes, in Brittany, and has been passed from mother to daughter since. It is still a family business, which in French lingerie is less unusual than it sounds and still says something about how decisions get made.
The house names four founding values — modernity, tradition, creativity and feminism — and the one that shows up most visibly in the product is creativity: embroideries, laces and prints are developed exclusively for Huit with artisan partners in France, Italy and Switzerland. When you see the Swiss embroidery on a Danse des Fleurs cup or the gold thread running through the Camille, that is what you're looking at.
The brand also says it introduced the first wire-free bra design, at a moment in the late sixties and early seventies when the bra itself was politically contested. Whether or not it was strictly first, the wire-free lineage is visible in how well the modern bralettes are constructed — they're shaped and supportive rather than simply soft.
The BIO collection: organic cotton, properly sized
This is the part of the range that has no real equivalent elsewhere: certified organic cotton in genuine band-and-cup sizing.
BIO-B20 Organic Cotton Underwire Bra — $89. Sizes 30–38, cups B–F, in white, blush and black. An underwire bra in organic cotton at a full cup range is the piece the category has been missing. If you have been wearing a cotton bralette because you wanted the fabric and tolerating the lack of support, start here.
BIO-B1 Organic Cotton Wireless Bralette — $87. Sizes 30–36, cups B–E. Note the sizing: this is a wireless bra sized like a bra, not a pullover in S/M/L. Same three colourways.
BIO-J41 Organic Cotton Brief — $48, XS–XL. Full-coverage, high-leg, the everyday one.
BIO-J20 Organic Cotton Bikini — $45, XS–XL.
BIO-J14 Organic Cotton Seamless Tanga — $39, XS–L. Seamless and organic cotton together is genuinely difficult to execute; most seamless underwear is fully synthetic because the bonding process needs it.
All five come in white, blush and black, so the bras and the underwear match across the range.
The rest of the range, by fabric
Cotton is one of four material stories at Huit, and the others are worth knowing if you're buying a full drawer rather than a single piece.
Lightweight microfiber (the FOS line). The FOS-B23 Lightweight Microfiber Spacer Bra ($94, 32–38, B–F) is a spacer bra — moulded from a three-dimensional knit rather than padded with foam. It gives a smooth, rounded shape under close-fitting clothing without the heat or bulk of a moulded foam cup, and it holds that shape through washing. Pair with the FOS-J14 thong ($38) or FOS-J41 brief ($41).
Modal. The SWM-C4 Sweet Modal Balconette Bra ($103, 30–38, B–F) in floral white, with a matching tanga ($62) and bikini ($69). Modal is a beech-derived fibre that drapes softer than cotton and resists the greying that cotton develops over many washes — the usual choice for people who find cotton underwear stiff.
Italian silk. The Prestige Rêve and Claire de Lune nightwear is 100% Italian silk: the Prestige Rêve Luxury Silk Kimono ($265), the Prestige Rêve Silk Babydoll ($228), and the Claire de Lune Silk Babydoll ($198) in black.
Embroidered lace. Where the house's artisan partnerships show most: Danse des Fleurs Underwire ($112) in white/green or mint, Prestige Bonbon Rose Underwire ($158) in rose, and Boheme Underwire ($127) in blush — the last running 30–38 in cups A through F, the widest range in the collection.
How Huit sizing works
Two systems run in parallel, which trips people up.
Bras use band and cup separately: 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 with cups from A to F depending on style. These are French cup letters, which do not map one-to-one onto US cups — a French D is not a US D. If you know your US size, check the conversion before ordering rather than assuming.
Underwear and unstructured pieces use XS through XXL, with most styles running to XXL and the seamless and silk pieces stopping at L.
If you're between sizes in a bra, the band should be snug on the loosest hook when new — it will give, and you'll want the tighter hooks later in the garment's life.
Caring for organic cotton lingerie
Organic cotton has not been treated with the softening and stabilising finishes applied to conventional cotton, so it behaves a little differently.
- Hand wash cool, or machine wash cool in a mesh bag on a delicate cycle.
- Skip fabric softener entirely. It coats the fibre, which is the opposite of what you want from cotton, and it degrades elastane.
- Never tumble dry a bra. Heat is what kills elastic. Reshape the cups by hand and dry flat.
- Expect a little shrinkage on the first wash and slight relaxation afterwards. This is normal for uncoated cotton.
- Rotate. A bra worn two days running doesn't get the chance to recover its elastic, and rotating three bras makes all three last more than three times as long.
Frequently asked questions
Are organic cotton bras actually better for sensitive skin?
The benefit comes from two things: the fibre itself is breathable and less likely to trap moisture against the skin, and certified organic processing avoids the formaldehyde-based finishes and residual dyes used in some conventional production. OEKO-TEX® certification is the specific thing to look for, as it tests the finished fabric for harmful substances. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, talk to your dermatologist about your particular triggers.
What's the difference between GOTS and OEKO-TEX®?
GOTS certifies that the fibre was organically grown and that the whole processing chain met environmental and social standards. OEKO-TEX® certifies that the finished textile has been tested for harmful substances. A garment can hold one, both, or neither — they aren't interchangeable.
Can you get an organic cotton bra with underwire?
Yes, though they're uncommon. Most organic cotton bras are wireless pullover styles in S/M/L. The BIO-B20 is an underwire bra in certified organic cotton sized 30–38, B–F.
What is a spacer bra?
A spacer bra is moulded from a three-dimensional knit fabric with air pockets built into its structure, rather than layered with foam padding. It gives a smooth, rounded shape under clothing while staying lighter and more breathable than a moulded foam cup, and it recovers its shape after washing rather than creasing.
Do French bra sizes match US sizes?
Band measurements are close, but cup letters diverge, and the difference grows as cups get larger. Check a conversion chart rather than ordering your usual US letter.
Is Huit still a French brand?
Yes. It was founded in Rennes in 1968 and remains family-run, with embroidery, lace and print development done with partners in France, Italy and Switzerland.
