Plunge Bras: Low-Cut, Deep-V & Lace Styles

A plunge bra is defined by its center gore — the point where the two cups meet at the sternum. In a plunge, that gore sits low and angled, creating a V-shaped neckline that works under deep-V tops, wrap dresses, and anything with a low center front. The cups themselves are typically half-cup or demi-cut, angled inward to push toward center. Journelle's plunge edit covers lace plunge bras, smooth t-shirt-style plunge bras in microfibre, padded plunge styles for extra projection, and unlined plunge underwires for a more natural shape. Most run from A through F cup.

Plunge bras suit center-full and close-set shapes best — the inward angle of the cups projects toward the center rather than to the side. If you find standard balconette or full-cup bras leave a gap at the top center, a plunge cut often resolves it. As with any underwire, fit starts with the band: it should be level, firm, and sit below the underwire channel, not on top of it.

How low should a plunge bra go?

The center gore of a plunge bra typically sits around 1 to 2 inches below the standard bra center point. How low you need depends on the neckline you're wearing it under — for a moderate V-neck, most plunge styles will work. For a very deep plunge dress or top, look for styles specifically described as "deep plunge" or check the gore height measurement in the product details. A bra that's not low enough will be visible at the center, which defeats the purpose.

Can a plunge bra provide the same support as a regular underwire bra?

Yes — a well-engineered plunge bra provides comparable support to a standard underwire style. The key difference is cup angle and gore height, not support capacity. What's the difference between a plunge bra and a push-up bra?

A plunge bra is defined by where the center sits — low, to hide under deep necklines. A push-up bra is defined by what the cups do — padding or angled inserts push breast tissue upward and inward to enhance cleavage. Many plunge bras have some push-up effect as a result of the cup angle, but they're not the same thing. A plunge bra without padding will give you a low-front fit; a push-up bra without a low gore won't solve the neckline problem.
