What Is a Cupless Bra? Open Cup, Ouvert & Shelf Styles Explained

A cupless bra lifts and frames the bust without covering it. Where a standard underwire bra has fabric cups that encase the breast, a cupless bra — also sold as an open cup bra or ouvert bra — stops at the underwire or shelf band below, leaving the breast exposed. The term comes from the French ouvert, meaning open, which shows up in European lingerie labeling; in American retail, "open cup" is the more common phrase.

Types of Cupless Bras

Shelf bra: A rigid band with light structure below the breast that supports from the bottom, with no cups above. The shelf does the holding; the bust rests on top, partially lifted. Shelf bras appear built into some babydolls and teddies but also exist as standalone pieces.

Ouvert underwire bra: Looks exactly like a regular underwire bra from the back and sides — same band, same underwire, same straps — but the cups are cut away or replaced with open frames. You get the fit architecture of a real bra with full exposure in front. Journelle's Cristiana Collection is a favorite for this exact silhouette.

Open cup balconette: A balconette cut with cups removed or deeply cut down. More structured than a shelf bra, but still framing rather than covering. Pairs well with matching underwired briefs or open-cup sets from the same designer.

How Cupless Lingerie Fits

Because cupless bras follow standard bra construction, they size the same way: band around the rib cage, cup based on the difference between band measurement and fullest bust measurement. Start with the same size you wear in your best-fitting underwire bra.

The underwire should sit flat at the breast root on all sides, never floating on breast tissue. The band should be snug enough that you can fit two fingers underneath — firm enough that it doesn't ride up when you raise your arms. Because there's no cup fabric to adjust for breast shape, open cup bras work best for rounder, fuller shapes. Very soft or pendulous shapes may prefer a shelf bra with more support below.

What to Wear an Open Cup Bra With

The most natural pairing is a matching brief — many open cup bras come in sets with coordinating underwired briefs, g-strings, or high-waisted bottoms. Cupless lingerie is designed specifically for intimate occasions rather than everyday wear. If you're new to the style, start with an ouvert underwire in your usual bra size and focus on getting band fit right first — the rest follows from there.
