Our Staff’s “Meet Cute” Stories

Our Staff’s “Meet Cute” Stories

Meet cute: A meet cute is a scene in media, in which two people meet for the first time, typically under unusual, humorous, or cute circumstances, and go on to form a future romantic couple.

At Journelle, we want life to feel like the movies. That’s why we believe in making every day lovely with luxury lingerie and always encourage you to romanticize your life. Love is at the forefront this month with Valentine’s Day, but it’s always at the center of what we do. After all, what’s lingerie without love? In honor of Valentine’s Day, we asked our Journelle staff to share their “meet cute” stories of how they met their partners, proving that sometimes life is actually better than the movies. We know Cupid would approve of us letting you in on our love story secrets. Read on to reminisce on your own or feel inspired by when one might happen – you never know where love may find you!

Old photos of our Co-CEO, Sapna, and her husband, Guido

“I met my husband Guido 18 years ago during a crazy snowstorm in New York City. I was newly single and sort of seeing someone whom I brought as my date to a Shabbat dinner party on the Lower East Side at the Hotel on Rivington. It was being hosted by my friend who has a twin sister. Guido was also invited to the dinner party but by the other twin sister, and this is where we were first introduced. Although I was there with someone else, Guido started asking about me within our friend group for weeks after the dinner party. Our mutual friends decided to set up a lunch and invited us both again. I’ll never forget he was wearing a blue shirt. He told me his heart was blue, and he needed me to turn it red again. Needless to say, I did – and the rest is history!”

Our Visual Store Merchandiser, Dottie, with her boyfriend

“I met my boyfriend through Instagram. He was a frequent “story-liker” of mine. I was living in New York City, and he still lived in my hometown. So, the next time I was home, we finally decided to meet up. We got ice cream and watched some cows while the sun set. Soon after and unexpectedly, he relocated to New Jersey, and we’ve been in love ever since.”

Our Art Director, Nicole, and her husband

“I met my husband Ryan when I was 20 years old while we were both in the same study abroad program in Venice, Italy. During our time there, we studied fine art painting, printmaking, and art history. He was the only boy in the program who was straight and under the age of 40. He was actually our teacher’s assistant and taught me how to do intaglio printmaking. I was not looking for love, but we were immediately drawn to each other from the start. You can't beat a first date under the Rialto bridge! There was nothing more exciting or romantic than getting lost and exploring the twists and turns of Venice together under the streetlights and over the canals. And turns out, we both grew up in the suburbs of Pennsylvania about an hour away from each other! This was 14 years ago, and we've been inseparable ever since.”

Our Junior Art Director, Savannah, with her boyfriend

Having just moved to Louisiana on a whim with my two cats, I was looking to make friends in my new town. I decided to hop on dating apps even though I told myself I would never download one. That is where I first saw my now boyfriend, Pronoy! New to the dating app scene, I unintentionally ghosted him for two weeks after he first messaged me. Eventually, I worked up the courage to message him back, and we decided to meet up for brunch. I arrived in the brightest outfit possible – Kelly green pants with cobalt blue heels so he couldn’t miss me. Pronoy was twenty minutes late to our first date, but I gave him grace since I took two weeks to message him back. I knew when I saw him that we were a perfect match. We talked about our love for trying new foods, traveling, and how we both moved to a new town without knowing anyone. All this to say, I deleted my dating app soon after we met, and we have been doing life together ever since. As our friends like to say, “it’s a Louisiana love story!”

Our Senior Graphic Designer, Victoria, and her boyfriend

“After moving halfway across the country to North Carolina for a little change in scenery, I did what any 20-something would do – downloaded a dating app. I used to think that meeting your significant other on an app would never feel as special, but I feel so lucky that we were ever even able to meet. I was a new Texas transplant visiting the beach from Raleigh, and he was a Marine stationed on the coast. We talked every day for a whole month before deciding that 2.5 hours wasn't too far. We finally met for our first date in Wilmington where we sat at a taco place for five hours. It still feels just like a Nicholas Sparks’ novel to me!”

Our Marketing Manager, Brianna, and her boyfriend

“Juan and I both went to college at FIT. However, that is not where we first met! He claims he never saw me around campus, but I like to think that's a lie. We originally met on a dating app. We matched a few different times over a handful of months, and we followed each other on Instagram. We'd frequently respond to each other's stories, but it took us several months before we actually met up. I can't remember who asked who, but we decided to grab drinks on Saint Patrick's Day at a bar called Trailer Park. It's trailer park themed, and they serve really good frozen margaritas – Juan's favorite! Juan wore his Doc Martens with a slight platform because he was afraid I’d be taller than him (I wasn’t). We ended up talking for hours and going record shopping after which is still one of our favorite pastimes almost five years later.”
