How to Wear a Garter Belt: Styles, Fit & Stocking Combinations

A garter belt is a waist or hip-hugging band with four to six suspender straps that clip to the welt at the top of stockings, holding them up without elastic. The term "garter belt" is the American name; in British English it's a suspender belt — same item, different words.

How to Put On a Garter Belt

Put the garter belt on before your underwear. This sounds counterintuitive, but it matters: it lets you remove underwear without unclipping the stockings. Hook the belt so it sits at your natural waist or low hip — where it feels secure is where it belongs, and that varies by torso length and belt width.

Roll the stocking up your leg rather than pulling. Once in place, clip the front suspender first (inner thigh is easiest to reach), then the back, then any side clips if the belt has six. The clips should grip the welt — the reinforced band at the top of the stocking — not the sheer fabric. Adjust tension so the stocking is taut without pulling the belt down off your hips.

Garter Belt and Stockings: Which Stockings Work

Fully fashioned stockings: Traditional seamed stockings with a welt at the top. Designed specifically for garter belts; the welt is wide enough to clip securely and holds its grip through a full evening.

Thigh highs: Most thigh highs have a welt and work well with garter belts. The key difference from hold-ups is that thigh highs often lack silicone grip and require a belt to stay up — they're made for this combination.

Hold-ups / stay-ups: These have silicone bands at the top designed to stay up without a belt. They can be clipped to a garter belt, but the thicker welt sometimes clips awkwardly. If you're building a proper stockings-with-garter-belt look, start with traditional thigh highs or fully fashioned stockings instead.

Thigh Garter vs. Garter Belt

A thigh garter is a single elastic band worn around the thigh — decorative, occasionally used to hold a stocking in place, but not the same thing as a garter belt. Thigh garters appear primarily in bridal traditions and as styling accessories. A garter belt with suspender clips provides the actual structural support needed for wearing stockings with garter belt styling through a full day or evening.

Styling Notes

Under a dress or skirt, the belt is invisible — the styling is for the wearer. Sheer black stockings with a lace garter belt and matching bra-and-brief set is the most common combination at Journelle. Nude or skin-tone stockings with a minimal belt work under eveningwear when the leg effect matters more than the lingerie look. The suspender straps are adjustable: start mid-length and move up if the stocking sags, down if it's pulling the belt off your waist.
