Underwire bras provide lift and shape that wire-free styles can't match — the underwire channels the weight of the bust outward and upward, creating a defined silhouette. Are underwire bras bad for you?

No — the research doesn't support the claims that underwire bras cause health problems. The discomfort associated with underwire almost always comes from incorrect fit: a band that's too loose, a cup that's too small, or a wire shape that doesn't match the wearer's breast root. A correctly fitted underwire bra should be comfortable for a full day of wear.

How should an underwire bra fit?

The wire should sit flat against the ribcage at every point — underneath the bust and along the sides. If it sits on breast tissue at the front or sides, the cup is too small. The band should be firm enough that you can't pull it more than two fingers' width from your back. The straps should contribute about 10% of the support; the band does the rest.

What's the difference between underwire and wire-free bras?

An underwire bra has a semi-circular wire sewn into a channel at the base of each cup, which lifts the bust and holds the cup shape. Wire-free bras rely on the cut of the fabric and the band tension for support. Underwire gives more definition and is generally better for larger cup sizes; wire-free is more comfortable for all-day wear and suits smaller busts and lower-impact occasions.
